The purpose of the Wayne Barton Study Center is to enhance the health, welfare, and education of children in need in our community. We believe that positive choices empower our youth into leading productive lives. High School graduation is the expectation of the Study Center; college education is the goal. WBSC is intended to fill those needs that are not being met through the home or school. The Study Center emphasizes academic development, counseling, nutritional needs, study skills, recreational activities, living skills, and citizenship in a multicultural society.
The Wayne Barton Study center came about when retired Boca Raton Police Officer Wayne Barton patrolled the Pearl City neighborhood in the 1980s. He understood the challenges facing the area’s youth as he had grown up under very similar circumstances: poor, suffering from low self-esteem, being told he would never amount to anything. To give the youth a “boost” he convinced the local housing authority to allow him to turn a 600 square foot apartment in Dixie Manor public housing project into a study center. The neighborhood youth were invited to use the center as a safe place to do their homework and escape an often- chaotic home environment that did not support learning.
Although the apartment was a good beginning, it was not large enough to accommodate all the youth who needed and wanted help. Wayne Barton envisioned a true study center designed to get young people off the streets and guide them toward a successful future. The challenge to meet the needs of the youth resulted in the formation of Barton’s Boosters, a group that worked tirelessly to raise $2.3 million dollars to construct the Wayne Barton Study Center.

About the Toy Drive
Toy Drive never fails to bring the community together for the common good as an annual family event. Families come out to enjoy free carousel rides, food, and Santa, all while bringing toys and donations for this Rotary Event. All six Rotary Clubs have partnered together over the years to host a successful Toy Drive.
The Toy Drive started in 2006 with the idea of Douglas Heizer and David Wilson. The Rotary Clubs of Boca Raton helped build the Carousel at Sugar Sand Park. As a Thank-You, the park gave the Rotary Clubs one day to use the carousel however they wanted. As Rotarians tend to do, they found a need in the community and went to solve it.
"It was a need I saw in our community that was being neglected, and I knew we had to make a difference somehow. I never expected this Toy Drive to get so big, but I am excited and happy to see the community joining together for such an important cause," says co-founder Douglas Heizer.
This Toy Drive collects toys for Wayne Barton Study Center. In the past twelve years, over $75,000 in toys and donations were collected from our community, for our community.
There are multiple different drop-off locations around Boca Raton. The spots are utilized to help increase the number of donations and promote the event. The Toy Drive also hopes to get assistance from Company Holiday Parties.
Throughout November, the Rotary Club and the open drop-off locations will accept toys and donations for the Boca Raton Toy Drive. All leading up to the Toy Drive event on December 2nd from 10 am to 4 pm at Sugar Sand Park, where kids can go on free rides on the carousel and see Santa. The event will also have free barbeque lunch and drinks with a donation or toy.
